Becoming a brand…

Kara didn’t mean to start a company. She didn’t mean to become a makeup artist. Hell, when this all started she didn’t really know you could be a makeup artist outside of New York City or LA! Social media and reality tv wasn’t big and didn’t showcase talented makeup artists for the everyday person. So how did this all happen? The story officially starts in 2008.

Kara moved back to Gainesville after graduating with a Bachelors of Arts in Theatre from Rollins College. She worked at her childhood dream job, she had an agent, and traveled around the state auditioning as an actress and model. But even though she did everything she loved, she wasn’t happy.

January of 2008 she was cast in a small independent film. She showed up to set and the “makeup artist” proved to be inexperienced and used drug store makeup. Being allergic to many cosmetic ingredients, Kara requested she do her own makeup. A few days into filming, the “makeup artist” abruptly stopped showing up. Seeing how well Kara’s makeup showed on film, the director asked Kara to step in as the film’s makeup artist. She agreed to help and showcased her natural talent for the remainder of filming.

The Summer of 2008 found Kara as a spokesmodel for a new cosmetics line launching on HSN. The job was not extremely lucrative, but something told her she needed to do it. At the end of the gig, she thanked the vendor for having her on air for the brand, and soon became the brand’s spokesmodel on HSN for eight years!

All of this on-camera experience was leading to the life-changing phone call in January 2009. The producer of the independent film referred her to a client looking for a makeup artist. The very next day she received a call from MTV Productions regarding an AXE commercial filming at the University of Florida. They asked for her makeup services and a styling team, and the Kara Winslow brand officially began - even though she didn’t know it yet!

Finding several successful makeup gigs and much praise for her work, 2012 found her providing makeup full time and becoming the official USA makeup artist for the cosmetics line she represented at HSN.

Kara Winslow and her team now specialize in camera-ready makeup, and on-camera looks for television, movies, and recorded spots for men and women. Because she has a keen understanding of the difference in how makeup reads in a mirror, with lighting, and on camera. Meaning her event and bridal makeup looks flawless for on camera and translates to timeless beauty in the images taken for that day. She has trained her team in her same successful techniques, and keeps up with the latest innovations and techniques.

Each makeup artist comes to your location and efficiently applies a full face of makeup in 20 minutes. Kara’s goal is makeup application to have you feeling your most confident self while representing the real, authentic you. Some of Kara’s clients include politicians, olympic athletes, and Hollywood movie stars.
